TWENTY-SEVEN

Crawford and Ott got wake-up calls at 6:30.

They met in the breakfast room at 7:00.

“Time to nail that Commie fuck,” Ott said as Crawford walked up to his table.

“I agree. It’s gonna be interesting to see what troops Janzek mobilizes.”

“I’m guessing he’s not gonna screw around,” Crawford said.

“I’m guessing you’re right.”

He was right.

At 7:50 a.m. when Crawford and Ott showed up at the docks, they first saw forty uniformed cops and ten more plain clothes officers lined up on either side of Dalyagin’s boat. After that, Crawford heard the chopping of engines overhead, and soon two helicopters appeared and started circling the Меркурий. And quietly idling at the stern of the Меркурий, was a 25-foot SAFE boat with twin 300-horsepower engines and POLICE inscribed on its hull in big blue letters and two uniformed cops inside the cabin.

Ott pointed up at a nearby building where one man was standing with a rifle on a sling on his back while another man aimed a long sniper rifle at the Меркурий.

“As promised,” Crawford said as he looked up at the building.

“Do you s’pose Dalyagin has a clue?” Ott asked, shifting his gaze back to the Меркурий.

“Oh yeah, guarantee he does. You don’t really think this build-up has escaped his attention, do you?”

Just as he spoke, the First Mate in the ball cap and beard walked out onto the stern of the boat. He glanced over at Crawford and Ott’s Crown Vic and dialed up an exaggerated scowl.

Ott flicked his head at him. “There he is again, Mr. Happy,” he said as Nick Janzek rolled up next to them in his Charger.

“I wish we had Chargers instead of Vics,” Ott said.

“What’s wrong with Vics?” Crawford asked as Janzek got out of his car.

“Chargers are just cooler,” Ott said as Crawford lowered his window.

“Morning, boys,” Janzek said. “Are you ready to rumble?”

“Ready,” Crawford said, opening the door and getting out as Ott did the same.

“I see we got the head of the welcoming committee waiting for us,” Janzek said as he gave the bearded first mate a wave.

The bearded man, of course, did not wave back.

The three walked up to the stern of the Меркурий until they were ten feet away.

As they got there, the bearded First Mate glanced to his left and Stanislav Dalyagin appeared.

One of the helicopter pilots lowered his craft so it was only 100-feet above the

Меркурий. Something told Crawford that Janzek had instructed him to do that.

“I am going to give you one half-hour of my time,” Dalyagin said, raising his voice to be heard above the helicopter. “That is all.”

Janzek glanced at Crawford. Crawford nodded.

“All right,” Dalyagin said. “Come aboard.”

The bearded First Mate opened the gate so they could step onto the Меркурий. Janzek led the way. They filed onto the ship past the First Mate. If looks could kill, they’d be dead. The three walked up to Dalyagin. There were no handshakes or nice to meet you’s.

“Follow me,” Dalyagin said.

The three followed him down a hallway with rich mahogany walls on either side and a bright Calcutta Gold marble floor.
